The Winter Olympics were held in in February 2014 in the Russian city of Sochi. Covering the event, British journalist John Sweeney noted that mayor Anatoly Pakhomophobov’s declaration that ‘there are no gays in Sochi’ was reminiscent of the Radio Stars tune of almost the same name, and about as believable.
